I started looking at senior apartment sharing when I was managing a retirement community. I noticed that one of the main reasons for seniors to move to a retirement community was that they were lonely, they may have lost a spouse or they had just become bored living by themselves. Another reason was they were afraid of a medical emergency and being alone with no one to help them. Their children were concerned about that their eating habits, personal attention to their own care and their mental well being.

I have had adult children call and say that their mom or dad was continually calling them and they need to find some relief. I told them their parent was probably lonely. They were looking for answers to the problem. I told them what I had seen in past years is that if they move the parent to a retirement community it might change what was happening. People that are lonely when living by themselves get bored and want someone to talk to. They call the children, but the children lead busy lives and have their own families to take care of, something had to change for the children.

I have seen seniors in a retirement community walk the floor in the afternoon and evening looking for something to do. There were things to do but they decided not to take part in the activity.

Five Things Seniors Must Consider When Choosing an Apartment

Sooner or later you as a senior will move out of your home to downsize your living requirements. Perhaps your children have grown up and gone to make the world a better place. Possibly you have recently lost your partner. Whatever the reason, you may possibly have decided to rent an apartment. If that is the case there are some things you must be aware of and some things you may want to avoid.

Location. Location. Location.

First. The most important consideration should be location. As a senior you will require medical attention. That is a fact. So you may require access to doctors offices, optometrist, medical clinics, and hospitals. You may be very healthy at the moment, but sooner or later you will need these facilities. It would be very wise to begin your search with this in mind.

A good idea if you have selected an unfamiliar city or an area in your city you may not know is to go on line and bring up Google Earth. Next, find apartments on line in that area, place a pin marker and check their locations on Google. Search hospitals or medical facilities on Google and you will be able to see not only where these things are located but you will see the shortest route for someone to get you there or for you to get where you need to go. You should keep this point in mind as you search. As a senior you may one day suffer a heart attack or stroke. The closer you are located to a hospital the better your chances of living.

Second. While viewing apartments notice how near are secondary schools. You should keep this information in mind as the older we get the less we tolerate the noise that associated with youngsters. Not that we don't love the kids but there comes a time when we need quiet.

Third. The apartment superintendent will know where the children are located within the complex. It may be best to listen carefully for once you are in and settled it will be too late to go to the rigors of another move.

Fourth. If you have indoor parking available it will be a smart idea to pay the extra and go for it. Nothing can be more upsetting to a senior than a boiling hot vehicle parked in the sun all day or one covered with ice or snow in mid winter.

Fifth. Which floor should you settle? First floor is the best. Elevators can be unreliable. If you arrive home from shopping and want to get to the 8th floor, or 18th you may have a long wait in the lobby. If the building needs to be evacuated for any reason it is best to be able to walk out. For your information the elevators may not be used in case of a fire.

Don't Be So Sure Your Loved One Is Safe Living in the Senior Community

Think your loved one is safe because they live in a senior independent living community? Home safety educators and advocates of independent living for older and physically-challenged adults, think differently.

Often Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS), when visiting clients who move from the family home to a senior independent living community, find that some adaptations for older residents have been made by the community's developer, but not enough. Modifications and products that incorporate universal and accessible design are not limited to grab bars in the tub/shower and toilet area or zero-step door entries, to allow us to age in place.

Is your loved one as an elderly person who is vulnerable to falls and accidents in the home or apartment? Most likely, yes. Now is the time to enhance the home environment to eliminate risks and hazards in each room or area of the unit to remain living independently. For example, does the senior apartment unit accommodate a safe area for exercise, rather than limiting yourself to only the community classes? Continued movement and fitness activities are essential to fall prevention and mobility.

What can be modified in the senior apartment to prevent accidents? You may be thinking that the purpose of relocating to the senior community was to avoid remodeling the family home. Do NOT assume the senior apartment is safe for your loved one. One size does NOT fit all and the safety of a loved one is individual to his or her health and wellness.

Evaluating and assessing the entire unit while still independent, will unveil products and resources that are functional and encouraging to continue leading a healthy, independent lifestyle. For example, does the bathroom or kitchen have towel bars that collapse when grabbed in an emergency? Replacing towel bars with a grab bar is a no-brainer, especially when the towel hides the appearance of the grab bar. Does the bathroom have a standard height toilet that hurts the knees and is a challenge with balance? Does the shower have a curtain hanging on a tension rod that will fall down when pulled? Don't wait for a future disease or physical challenge to begin - make life easier now!

Cabinets with pull-out shelves will encourage continued nutrition and visitability. While the senior apartment may have a small kitchen, does it provide accessible storage? Does the refrigerator have shallow shelves? If not, add organizing tools to provide easy reach.

Modifications like these would prevent injuries and encourage a lifestyle that leads to health and longevity and keep facilitate "independent living within the senior community. Most communities will approve the addition of safety-enhancing features and be happy to leave them in place for the benefit of future residents.

"Don't wait until they get injured, and take a "fix as you go approach." Such approach can turn a house into a rehab center. Affordable Housing for Seniors in South Orange County, California

In South Orange County, California finding affordable rentals for anyone, let alone a senior citizen who has very little savings, sounds like a true oxymoron. However with some research, time and a great deal of persistence something that resembles, or at least comes close to being budget conscious can be attained.

Due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, my mother-in-law found herself in need of a new place to live after over 30 years in her rent-controlled apartment. She had been in a run down building in Hollywood. Her landlord had passed away and the relatives were selling the building. Thanks to my husband's research he found that there were several options, none of which would be at the same $460.00 a month, but closer to us and in a much better area than what she had been living in.

Living in South Orange County, we were able to check out the different areas personally. Since my mother-in-law doesn't drive and is 78, we had to make a list of definite needs to make the transition for both her and us as smooth as possible.

We decided we had to have it close by, but not too close-we wanted to keep our privacy and make sure she would not rely on us to take her places. The complex had to either have a bus stop within walking distance or a shuttle service. The most important was that she had to be able to afford the apartment on her own, since neither we nor my sister-in-law could afford to supplement her social security. If possible, since she wouldn't know anyone, we were hoping that there would be a social calendar for her to get involved with or a senior center close by.

Thanks to our local Social Security Office, they pointed us to the internet. We googled "affordable rentals for senior citizens". We narrowed the search down to our particular part of Orange County. We were able to locate several complexes and check them out. All but a "high end" offering had a lengthily wait list. Thankfully they all gave us an average of 6-12 months, which we managed to work out with the family who now owned her building. They were also going to give her a re-location settlement, which would provide her with funds to afford a mover and offset the cost of the rent increase.

All the places had brochures, applications and floor plans available for us to take back and discus with her. She decided on two. Then it was a waiting game. My husband would call the apartment managers every 2-3 weeks to check on where his mother was on "the list". Finally one came up. This particular complex had one coming up in a couple of weeks. My mother-in-law was actually still a few names off, but since the manager knew she had to be out of her present apartment by the end of the same month and my husband had been so good about checking in, she let the space go to her.

The apartment has a shuttle service several times a week to the local markets, to several medical offices (which included her Kaiser-Permanente clinic), an exercise room, a craft room, internet access (as well as classes!), weekly get-togethers and a host of supervised activities. They also have laundry rooms on each floor, central air-conditioners, private patios and dishwashers. All things her current place never even considered having!

Here are a listing of some of the alternative senior housing areas we found:

Freedom Village in Lake Forest: This is a religious-based complex, but it is open to everyone. Should it be necessary, assisted living and nursing centers are available on site.

Heritage Park and Square in Ladera Ranch: These were the most expensive and the nicest. No transportation, but otherwise had many social amenities available.

Buena Vida at Town Center in Rancho Santa Margarita: Senior apartments. Amenities were available, but not plentiful.

Fountain Glen in Laguna Niguel: Senior apartments. Due to long wait list of over a year, we didn't consider the area.

Hacienda del las Palmas in Laguna Hills: Closest to us, too close. However it had not only senior apartment, but if necessary, assisted living, residential car and Alzheimer's Care-the only one that did.

Renaissance at the Regency and it's sister, the Wellington in Laguna Woods and Aliso Viejo: Both are independent retirements centers which have both kitchens or without and use of a dining facility. These also had assisted living as well as residential care. Pricey and very "hotelish".

There are many others available, but all, again, have long waiting lists. The best suggestions:

Decide what the most important amenities are, what is the highest amount that the renter can afford to pay and then contact the local social security office for the best direction in which to start the hunt.

Affordable Apartments for Rent in the Salt Lake Valley

Often the first thing one does when searching for a home to rent is assess their income. For many Utahans with large families, liabilities or low wages, this can seemingly be a discouraging task. Utah's economy is increasing and therefore the population is swelling right along with it. This progress is in turn nudging, or rather, shoving the cost of renting an apartment in Utah to levels that are surpassing previous years. Over the past four years, [Utah] has seen the cost of housing, both rental and owner-occupied, rise more that 50 percent and rental vacancy rates drop to 4 percent or less (www.huduser.org/periodicals/pdrperio.html).

As daunting as this may seem, there are countless options for those who simply cannot afford these high rental rates. Realizing that this high cost of living drives away many important, but sadly underpaid community members such as school teachers, factory workers, small business owners and police officers, Utah's legislature has passed the Utah's Moderate Income Housing Law. This law requires communities to design individual strategies so that their low and moderate income inhabitants are encouraged to remain in the area. One of the programs that evolved with this process is the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program, also known as Section 42 of the Internal Revenue Code.

The tax credit program is quite literally the shining star of the Moderate Income Housing Law. This is because the LIHTC program was created as an incentive for investors and builders to construct or remodel buildings specifically for the low to moderate income population. Because the program provides credits to be used against sizeable tax liabilities, many large and successful corporations are taking part in the tax credit program, building beautiful, and often luxury apartment communities that are desirable to many and affordable for even more. While 'low income' or 'affordable' housing was once met with opposition from developers and communities alike, affordable apartments both in urban and rural areas are showing up all over the state.

The stereotype of the low income family as only one that is destitute with scores of children also no longer stands, since the program supports single adults as well as single parents (and countless other living arrangements); and although the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program does not provide its credits for student, transient or life-care housing, there are exceptions to many of the strict policies. Students (whether primary, secondary or collegiate) are permitted to reside at affordable housing communities so long as they meet the income requirements and there is at least one member of the household that is not a full time student. The tax credit program is also available for designated senior housing, active senior communities or 55+ apartment communities though care beyond social activities, amenities or basic housing is prohibited.

The tax credit program is also specifically designed to promote the growth, welfare, and continued success of the families it assists. For example, as of February 1st, 2006 a one-person household in Salt Lake County, Salt Lake City or Davis County applying for an affordable apartment to rent can make as much as $25,740 per year and still be considered for the tax credit program. Upon re-certification (the following year), that same person can actually make up to $36,036 (140% of the original limit) as the program was intended to encourage families to increase their earnings and advance in their careers with the hope that eventually they will not need government-funded housing assistance.

As more and more baby boomers get to the point in their lives where they need to start looking for senior retirement living options, it seems that more and more options appear. It isn't just that the internet makes it so simple to find out information about these options; it's that there are really so many more choices than there used to be.

In the not so long ago past, about the only places that someone could go to live after they retired was to a nursing home. That is, if they couldn't find a place to stay with one of their children. And if you didn't have any children to move in with, you were kind of out of luck with finding any place to stay.

Lately, though, for about the last 7 years or so, there has been a huge boom in the number of places that are available for seniors to live. Just a short drive down the street in most any city in the US will reveal any number of places where seniors, and in many cases, only seniors can live.

Even a check of one of the online classified sites, will find a number of listings for people who want to either find a place to live for a senior or who have a place available for a senior to stay.

Senior apartment complexes are becoming more and more common to see in many of the smaller communities in the US. This is due in a large part to the sheer number of baby boomers who are reaching the age when they need to live in place where other seniors live.

Not just for the extra care that comes with living in a senior retirement village, but simply for the amount of companionship that comes with living among a group of peers. These are the people who saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan and fought for the civil rights act to be passed. Their time in history was a very active one. And it's hard to live around people that just don't get that idea.

Senior retirement living does not have to be about living in a nursing home and sitting around waiting for something to happen. There are a great many more active options for baby boomers to live during their golden years. And because there are so many boomers still waiting to retire, the amount of senior housing choices is only going to increase.

Introducing Senior Living Options to Your Parents - Present Ideas As Possibilities, Not Absolutes

Children of aging parents often struggle when it comes time to convince Mom or Dad that it is time to downsize and move to senior housing. Whether it is to an independent senior apartment or to an assisted living community or a nursing home; the first hurdle is getting your parent to even consider the idea as a possibility. Unless it is a crisis situation, it is better to allow the senior time to get used to the idea. With time and exposure to the idea, they may even accept the idea of moving as a positive.

Seniors Frequently Resist Change:
Think about it. How long have your parents lived in their home? What does this home symbolize to them? What do they feel they are giving up if they move out of their home? Give them time to think about the idea of change. Introduce the idea in a conversational manner. Talk about "what if." Giving them time to think and consider, allows them the freedom to come to their own decision.

Old Memories
Even though senior living communities have changed dramatically over the past few years, many of us still have memories of visiting Grandma or Grandpa in that depressing Old Folks Home - called a nursing home. I remember visiting my Grandmother; the yelling of old people who had "lost their minds" (as my mother explained it); the smell of urine as I passed certain rooms. Our parents have these memories too. Sometimes these memories can be very vivid. Besides, senior apartments or communities are for "old people." I heard a great definition of "old" from a senior: "Old is always 20 years older than I am."

Presenting Senior Living as a Possibility:
Senior Communities realize the stigma they have to overcome with many seniors. To help introduce the new style of senior living, many communities host educational classes or fun senior outings for the community. Most communities offer free tours that can be scheduled around the lunch hour. Lunch is included in the tour. One group of senior communities in my area is holding a Chef's Competition and inviting the community. Check out the senior communities in your area. See what activities they are having that your parent might enjoy.

Keep the Conversation Low-Key:
Unless you are dealing with a crisis situation, keep the conversation low-key. Parent value their independence as much as we value ours. Introduce the idea long before it becomes a necessity. Let your parents explore their options. Be open to discussing possibilities with your parents. What are their choices? Some seniors are quite capable of staying in their own homes with just a little outside help. There is no "one size fits all answer."

What if They Won't Listen?
Remember, unless a parent is mentally incapacitated, they still have the right to make their own decisions. Just as your parents might not have agreed with all the decisions you have made in your life, you may not agree with all the decisions your parents make. The most important consideration is their safety. If they are adamant about staying in their own home, and they are mentally competent, it is their choice.

There are resources available to help seniors stay independent in their own home. Check with your local senior center, the local Area Agency on Aging, or check with a Senior (Elder) Advisor or Geriatric Care Manager in your local area.

Senior Community Options - A Whole New Breed

In the previous few decades a whole new breed of community has shown up in the United States-the senior community. While some types of senior communities, such as nursing homes, have been around previously, the newer types are different. These newer senior communities try very hard to accommodate the needs of seniors, yet still giving them an exciting and comfortable environment that they look forward to every day.

Looking for "people time" seniors move to the groups to meet new people, and for the facilities and services that are offered, also. Fun and excitement, within an arm's reach-that's what senior communities are.
With a lot of communities founded throughout the state, Florida is the place to be in the retirement community world-the capital, if you want to think of it that way. With gorgeous scenery and wildlife, Florida's warm climate is nice and comfy during the winter, something that seniors appreciate. Home to some of the most lavish panoramas in the nation, the Florida Panhandle region has retirement neighborhoods situated throughout the area. Assisted Living Apartments - A Perfect Choice For Retiring Baby Boomers

Many people thought the day would never come when the baby boomers would start retiring. This generation that made the idea of eternal youth so very popular, never trusting anyone over 30, is now beginning to retire from the world of work. And they are needing places to live.

It used to be, when the boomers were kids, that nursing homes were about the only option if retirees did not live at hoe or with their children. But a new idea is becoming more and more popular as the years go by. And that is the idea of senior assisted living apartments.

This kind of living facility is where only seniors live.
That may sound a little silly to say but there are other kinds of assisted living apartments where people who may or may not be seniors are allowed to live. Basically the idea of a senior apartment like this is that the people who live there need some amount of personal care in the course of the day, but they do not need the same kind of care that folks who are living in a skilled nursing facility would need.

In effect, this is an apartment complex where all the apartments are filled with people of retirement age, baby boomers and people who are a bit older can live there, but usually nobody younger than 55. Sometimes there are age allowances for this, like in the case where there is a couple but only one of them is over the minimum age.

Nobody wants to make life difficult for couples, so there is usually an allowance made for these situations. And if the management does not want to rent to you because one of you is under 55, then it is perfectly alright to go down the road to the next senior apartment complex.

The world of retirement living facilities is full of options right now. This is due in part to the fact that there are just so many baby boomers. They make up the lion's share of the retirement age people right now. It won't stay like that forever, but for sure, for the next 30 years or so, the vast majority of people retiring and seeking a place to live are going to be boomers.
