Gift Ideas for Grandparents in a Senior Home

By

Christmas shopping is already stressful, but it can be especially difficult to find the perfect gift for seniors who live in an assisted living facility or nursing home. Among other things, there are real space limitations. You don't want to be the relative who loads up grandma with a bunch of useless junk that will end up cluttering up her already small senior apartment
With that in mind, here are three simple ideas for gifts that can warm the heart of a senior this Christmas.
1) A Digital Picture Frame.
You have seen these before, right? You can load up these frames with pictures of the grandchildren, and they will rotate all day long. Grandma can hang this frame up on the wall and be reminded of family continually. And when she wants to change it up, she can do that, too!
2) A Video Conferencing Tool
There are many different ways to video chat today, and there is no "best" way to do it for everyone. If grandma already has a computer in her apartment, you could buy her a Skype compatible camera and get the software loaded on her computer. If this is too complicated for her, and you live far away, you can pay a company a small fee to come and do it for you. If she does not have a computer, why not get her a new iPod Touch that has Face Time. These are tremendously easy to operate. If she has wifi in her building, she can hook up to that, and be chatting with the family with minimal setup. It is incredibly easy, even for seniors! Of course, you would need to get one as well...
An E-Reader
I learned just how powerful the Kindle can be for seniors this week when my own aging father fell in love with mine. His eyes have gotten pretty bad, but with an E-Reader like the Kindle, he could adjust the font to make it as big as he needed it. At the touch of a button, he had a giant print book! It was awesome. I have not seen him read that much in years. Plus, with these E-Readers, you can shrink an entire library into something the size of a single book. That means no additional clutter. Oh, and in case you are wondering, these devices are incredibly easy to operate. No technology gap here!
So there you have it. Three ideas to make grandma smile this Christmas. Let's hope she enjoys these gifts as much as the rest of us!
